View Full Version : Is anyone up for a mini challenge?

Just wondering if anyone was up for a mini-challenge to get thru the end of July. I will definitely try to set one up for August because Mike is having to work the entire month up in Austin and without someone holding me accountable I won't hit the gym.

So my goal for the rest of July is to continue running. I want to run 3 times a week for 1 mile. I have 1.67 miles in thanks to Monday and Tuesday of this week but I need to keep going. Running is very hard for me to get into but it has a great payoff for my body. I'm trying to figure out the best balance of pushing and resting so maybe I can work on that thru the end of the month.

I'm in!! MissAngie and I have been walking/running a couple of nights a week and I want to make sure that I get in 5 days a week between now and the end of the month. I'm 2/2 this week. :)

Funny you mention this. Ran into my friend this morning picking up the kids and she said so are you stuck in your annual July rut? I had to laugh and said yeah but this year I'm not as worried about it! Last 2 yrs (this being the 3rd) i get upset bc for some reason I slack off in July, too much going on and I'm just so tired I can't get up out of bed to do it. When she said that to me, it reminded me that it happens to me every year and that this year is no differnet and I shouldn't fear that I'll get out of shape and out of the habit bc It picks back up in Aug and back on track in Sept.

So I would love to do something to kinda not get to lazy this month. Honestly though it'll have to wait until Monday. I'm doing a yard sale at my house on Saturday, VBS at church this week at night and DS has a baseball tournament that starts tomorrow night. So until I get this yard sale out of the way I may not be able to give it my all.

I will! We have a brand new treadmill that I keep telling myself I have to get back on. If I could just do it for 20 minutes a day I'll be in that much better shape for Disney in August. I find every excuse in the world not to go on it.

I'm up for it! I just recently got back into running and am finally starting to see some payoff. I just bumped it up to 4 miles run/walk during the week and 4 mile run on the weekend with DH. Getting some good use out of the new double jogging stroller bought through SR!

So far this week, I got a run in Sunday and Monday but took yesterday off to get some errands done and got in a run this morning. So, for the week I'm 3/4.

Awesome!

Marianne - is your treadmill near a tv? I find if I walk while watching a tv show my time goes by really really fast. maybe you could try that.

No, unfortunately it isn't. My DD has Dirty Dancing on her ipod so I usually watch that. I'll have to let her download more movies!

Totally agree with Catherine on that! The treadmill can be tough! If I can watch TV while on there, it's enough of a distraction that it seems to go faster. Right now, we don't have a TV near the treadmill and when I'm on there, I tend to just watch the time count down and it seems like forever!! A good distraction can help the treadmill a great deal!!

oh that is a good idea. I wish treadmills were more condusive to reading. I love to sit on the exercise bike and read a book but it just doesn't translate at all on a treadmill.

I'm all in! It is my goal to get in a walk or walk/run at least 4-5 days a week until I die. Okay, maybe until SR Cruise! Life is so stressful for me right now. I need to walk just to decompress. If I lose a few pounds, it will just be a side benefit at this point.

I'm in. I need some motivation to get some exercise. I'm not looking to lose any weight, but I know that it is a good thing to get some light exercising while pregnant. I just haven't had the motivation. So maybe if I have to check in here, that will be enough to get me up and moving for awhile each day.

Some exercise can definitely help keep the weight gain in check and help with delivery as well! Just make sure you don't overdo it! Rest when you need to and drink lots of water! I walked and did eliptical up until the week my DS was born and it really helped! I wasn't as diligent with it the second time around and it has taken a tad longer to take off all of the weight I want this time around. But I am motivated now and seeing some progress!

I'm actually gonna go get some time in on the Wii Fit right now! I guess you guys (and Grabbit Rabbit) are telling me to get off the computer and go do something else on my day off LOL! Maybe I'll have more crazy credits to do by the time I'm done.

That sounds fun Lisa. I am still hoping mike wants to get a wii for christmas so I can get the wii fit.

I think there is a magazine called FitPregnancy that might be helpful. I see it advertised in my shape subscription each month.

Everything in moderation. Talk to your doc they'll tell you what you can and can't do.
With my first I did nothing and could tell. With no#2 I was in the best shape but bled in the beginning so I had to take it easy. Then I was able to go back but didn't do too much. But this deliver was much easier then no1. The third I was back at the YMCA full time, lifting weights and running, OB told me that I could keep with it but not get my Heart rate up over a certain amount. (He was afraid I would have a heartattack! LOL) I worked out 5 days a week up until the week she was born and that deliver by far was the fastest, easiest of them all. I felt so good when I was done, I could have walked right out of the hospital. (Of course being my third I told him I wasn't going anywhere and took my 2 days! LOL)

If you haven't worked out in a while then start off with some leisurely walks.

I was ok to lift weights through them all but couldn't move up on any had to keep the current weights at where they were. Again my OB knew what shape I was in so he was the best person to make the decisions.

GOod luck! You'll feel so much better when you do though.

I'm still loving the Wii Fit! I usually do the yoga, strength and a few balance things. Those lunges and squats are killer!! With two little ones, it's not always easy finding time to work out so I like having the Wii Fit and the jogging stroller!!:)

Carla - I am battling a UTI today so I didn't make it to the gym. I figure tomorrow after I get 24 hours of antibiotics in I'll give the gym a try.

My goal is running 3 times a week and then weights whenever. I'm mainly concentrating on the running piece right now. But I am 2/3 this week and have half of my miles run.

So we are also 3/3 this week. I can't run though. I don't see how ya'll do it. I don't think I could run to the end of my driveway

I always think this when I get out of my routine, and I just have to start slow. I run in spurts and just try to increase the length and time of the spurts. If you can run to the end of driveway, be proud of that and after you do it for a few days, try to go a bit further. You'll be running the mile before you know it. It seems impossible, but it isn't. It just happens a little at a time! You can do it!! :)

Keep up the good work walking!

Thanks for the encouragement!! You know, I think I did read that running in spurts, then walking and then running again is very effective for burning calories. Something about the way it boosts your heart rate or metabolism...it boosted something LOL :D

It does burn more calories when you mix the two. That is exactly what we did on Tuesday night. Running then walking boosts metabolism and conditions you for the longer run. Oh, I hope I stay motivated! I have some calories to burn, girl.

disney_girl
07-17-2008, 08:41 AM
Yes, it does help you burn calories when you alternate running and walking. If you want to run, just set a goal and stick with that one for a week or so, then increase it. Start small and you'll be surprised at how you are able to increase!

I have a dilemma today... I've been putting the kids in the double jogging stroller and running in the morning. But last night on our walk with DH, one tire is completely flat and can't even be aired up. So, we'll have to get a new tube tonight. So, I'm trying to convince myself to run on the treadmill...it just isn't working right now! lol Maybe I can put DD in the single stroller and walk with DS- at least that would be moving! Dunno...

Get moving everyone!!

LOL I find the treadmill SOOOOO boring. I am like a 5 year old watching the time/distance 'am I done yet am I done yet'. IF I get on the treamdill, I have to be watching something on TV that I am very intersted in :D

Carla - get on that treadmill. It is too hot in Dallas to go outside for a walk!

disney_girl
07-17-2008, 11:26 AM
Thanks for the push Catherine! My rule with running outside is that it has to be before 8am which usually works out because my kids are early birds! But the later it gets, it is just too darn hot!

My treadmill is in my scrapbook/craft/mess (lol) room. So, when DD went down for her morning nap, I let DS go in there and do some craft things while I ran on the treadmill. I did one of the treadmill programs that alternates running/ walking with varied incline. I did 2.5 miles so definitely better than doing nothing! A tv would make it much better, but we're one of those weird families that only has 1 tv and it's in the living room. I helped DS practice his ABC's and counting to 100 so at least I was a little distracted!

At least that's out of the way for today! Now onto other things!

If your weird then so are we, we only have 1 in the LR, we do have a small one downstairs in the basement but it was mainly used eons ago for my taebo tapes and now the kids use it for PS2. We've learned to watch TV as a family and tolerate what eachother wants to watch.

Now I've been bad, only once this week. If running around at the baseball field tonight counts then I did do something. Tourny game 45 mins away, had to make 2 trips from the car to the field with coolers, chairs etc (DH had to work and miss the game). THen it started to rain and I didn't want to get stuck in pouring rain with 3 kids and all that crap so I ran back to the car with one load and moved the car closer. Rain stopped finished game we won 23-8! OH DD4 had to go potty so we ran across the other side to the potty. So I guess between hauling boxes for yard sale and my "running" I did get some of a work out in. Oh and I did 25 push ups this morning bc I felt guilty that I choose to sleep in! lol

Yeah, I like that the Wii Fit keeps track of all your stats. I think it said that I haven't missed a day in 8 weeks on it. Some of those days I only did the body test though (center of balance, weight, BMI and balance tests) and others I did the yoga, strength and aerobics. I like that I can also weigh DD7months on it and get an accurate weight on her! (You can hold something and it will tell you how much that item weighs).

Tricia- I know what you mean... when you are working out, you want the big calorie burn. But like you said, when you feel the muscle burn, it's doing good!

Yeah April, we are like that too... we watch as a family and don't have any desire for more TV's. Not knocking anyone who does- it just works for us! I think all of that running around should count for something tonight! Glad you all won!!

We got the inner tube (run flat lol) for the stroller so we can get that fixed up for tomorrow morning!

Sounds like everyone is doing well! Keep it up!

Did my Wii Fit again yesterday for 20 min. and it said I lost 2.5 lbs. from the day before??? Huh, that's impossible, I don't think that it's very accurate but I love when it tells me things like that! I'll take it. :rotfl:

Today, doing nothing.

Tomorrow I do a fitness walk that we are having in our town that benefits the Petit Foundation. It is a 1.5 mile walk around my neighborhood block, literally...should take all of about 45 min. to walk but in this heat, that is plenty long enough for me to be outside!! :D

DH worked from home yesterday so we got up and ran. Same this morning...he usually picks a tougher route (more hills) and I run the whole route (intead of walk/run during the week) so it's definitely a workout! I made it 5 days this week:banana:.

On the Wii Fit...are you measuring around the same time as the prior day? I think it says it can fluctuate around 2 pounds if you do it at different time. Usually my weight is pretty consistent on there, but I might have an occassional blip!

I ran most of my three miles tonight. YEA!! My goal is to be back to running three miles at least a twice a week by the end of next week and then interspersing that with walking and other stuff at least three days.

How is everyone else? Are you at least getting out there a bit? I remember reading one time that even if you don't feel like exercising, put on your walking shoes and tell yourself you will walk just 10 minutes. Almost every time you do that, your adrenaline will kick in and you will go well past that 10 minutes.

You are doing great!! I've managed to get out and do close to 4 miles each day this week. On the weekend, we run at least 3 miles of it and during the week I alternate. Somedays it just seems hard pushing the stroller- lol.

I'm sure that is true- there are mornings I really don't want to get up and go, but once I'm out there I forget all about it. But I know that I feel better mentally when I can get out and move! I'm not seeing lots of weight loss, but I am getting more toned so that's a big plus. Eventually I'll add in some strength training and other stuff.

We have a new cardio machine at my gym that is like an inclined stairmaster - called the summit climber or something - and I do pretty well on it. It has a little bounce in it to help you come up when you are climbing. Maybe I will try it tonight.

Uh yeah not my favorite machine to pass the time but it does work!
Our YMCA was just totally redone and expanded we have a lot of new equipment. THe one old "Gauntlet" is like climbing up stairs that one is harder for me. I can actually read while on the stairmaster (That's how I ended up finished the last 100 so pages of Harry Potter #7 65 mins flew by! lol)
We have new ones that are a cross between stairmaster and Eleptical's that have a bounce in them. I like them better then the elp's bc you can change your motion but if I get going to fast the bounce is tough.

I'm stinking it up this week. I did get a short walk in last night while my housekeeper was here. Monday and Tuesday were spent doing things the kids needed done, and last night I was kid free but my husband threw in a wrench. I need to be better about demanding my time and stop allowing myself to give in to everyone else. It's totally my fault. I use them as an excuse. I need to get better at scheduling around them if I'm going to get into shape. It's sad to know what the problem is and not fix it.

Made it to the Y this morning, did 40 mins on the stairmaster (works wonders for your butt and hips! lol) and about 25 mins worth of weights on the machines (not free weights). Slowly getting back into the swing of things.

Nice work! That's a really good, rounded workout!

I wish I could help, but I am selfish with my time when it comes to exercising. LOL! My family knows that if I don't get my exercise time, I'm not happy. And if mama ain't happy in my house, NO ONE is happy. :rotfl:

I ran most of my three miles tonight. YEA!! My goal is to be back to running three miles at least a twice a week by the end of next week and then interspersing that with walking and other stuff at least three days.

How is everyone else? Are you at least getting out there a bit? I remember reading one time that even if you don't feel like exercising, put on your walking shoes and tell yourself you will walk just 10 minutes. Almost every time you do that, your adrenaline will kick in and you will go well past that 10 minutes.

Way to go Tricia! You are awesome when you get on track--keep up the great work.

Same here, mom ain't happy no one is, DH doesn't get mad at me when the alarm wakes him up at 530am bc he knows that's about the only time I'm willing to commit for ME. (Although if I hit snooze to many times he gets grumpy and will eventually kick me out of bed.

Ugh...I so didn't want to go out this morning! But I made myself and walk/ran 4 miles. It's hot but there was actually a decent breeze most of the way so that helped. I changed my route and had some downhills which helped...since I know DH is working from home tomorrow and he'll have us going on the big hills lol.

I'm hoping to find some time to at least do the Wii Fit this afternoon...we'll see!

Thanks Tricia! I've never really thought of myself as a runner, but I seem to enjoy it lol. DH and I used to run when we first got married and off and on through the years. There of course are days it totally sucks though! I started doing a few miles on the treadmill and then July 1st, started running outside. We are in a new development that has some bike/ jogging trails and lots of hills which makes it a little easier/nicer. I was doing 3 miles/day and just recently started pushing myself to do 4. I'm finally starting to see an improvement in my body, so that's my motivation. I think in a few weeks, I may try to push myself to doing 5 miles a few days a week. The jogging stroller is super easy to maneuver but wish it had auto pilot or something LOL.

We took the kids to the park and walked a little bit last night around 8. When we were heading home, there was a coyote that ran by us very fast into the "forest" and scared me- although I realize he didn't care about us and wouldn't bother us- it just startled me! I told DS that was the reason we didn't run through the forest in the mornings without DH... well that and I'd rather make DH push the stroller up those trails than me LOL.

Never got around to the Wii Fit today, but chasing around a crazy crawling 7 month old and a 4 year old with TONS of energy has to count for something:rotfl:

Everyone is doing great!!

That's great! You can definitely work up to more. I used to get side cramps, but luckily haven't for awhile. Once you are comfortable with a mile, just gradually increase it.

Thanks for the encouragement Carla. I find that when I stay hydrated all day then I don't get side cramps but when I don't get all my water in before I start working out then I get them. I need to find the happy medium with water though so I don't get water logged.

I find I get side cramps when I'm pushing myself to fast, that's when I bump it down a little and take it slower. If I catch my breathe I'll go back up or just finish it out at a slower pace. Happens more when I do it outside then on the treadmill.

Yeah...you don't want the sloshy feeling either lol. Just don't try to go from 1 mile straight to 2- add gradually like 1/4 mile at a time. It's easier if you try just adding in one day of a longer run at a time. Well, that's my opinion for what that is worth..lol

Well, we did our run this morning so got that out of the way. I did better than last week when I missed a few days! I managed to make myself get out there every day this week! I am keeping track of how many miles I get in and Sunday through today was 29 miles. There were at least 3 nights we walked to the park after dinner as well. That's by far the most miles I've done in a week yet and I'm sure we'll go out in the morning!

My SIL is getting married next Saturday so this next week is going to be crazy. We're all in the wedding (even the 7 month old lol) so we have the researsal and then I am doing the wedding cakes . It started out as a "small wedding" and then she changed the cake to 80 servings and now it's well over 100 and the groom's cake is a tequila bottle! So, Wednesday through Saturday are going to be crazy for me- hopefully I can force myself to run because I'm sure I will need it! lol

Yesterday was the first day that I took off in two weeks, so I decided I should really push it today. I ran a full three miles for the first time since the Race for the Cure in April. YEA!! Of course, it took me about 39 minutes, so I guess it's more "jogging" than "running." But I definitely feel it in my core muscles more than when I walk.

Thanks so much to everyone for checking in every now and again. It helps me remember that we are all working through this together. :)

Way to go Tricia! I call anything where I am doing more than power walking running so definitely use that term.

Good luck with the wedding and all the preparations Carla. I love seeing your cakes so post pics of these when you are done :)

I made it to the gym last night and today. I sat on the exercise bike yesterday because I just was not in the mood to even be there. I was exhausted but knew that I would not feel any better skipping so I went and gained a little energy and then went to bed at 10:30. I felt so much better today.

Today I ran my mile taking 2 30 second breaks for water and then finished up the half hour by walking the rest. I then did 30 mins on the eliptical machine and felt great. I hope I can keep this up.

SO I took my time had a cup of coffee came down here and did my survey's then went for my run. I'm not sure how far it was bc I cut some of it out but it was a full 30 mins.

And hey Tricia..... I defintely don't "run" but if I can go the full distance/time at a good pace (and not stop) that's good enough for me! :sunshine:

Way to go everyone! Let's keep moving this week!!!

We ran this morning. We usually stay around the streets/ path in our part of the development, but today we ran to the community pool/ park area. We had no idea how far it would be...by the time we got home it was right at 5 miles. We ran the 2.5 miles there and let DS play at the park for about 20 minutes and then ran all the way home. No hills, but also no shade which was hard. But we made it.

It's 105 here right now...UGH! So, if we are going to run outside, I don't like to leave the house much after 8- just starts getting too hot. Near the end of today's run, I started feeling sick. I really need to work on drinking more water while we're out there I think and maybe a sports drink or something when we get home. What is the best thing to eat after a run...anyone know? Are you supposed to eat protein? It took awhile for me to start feeling better today, so I need to figure out the best thing for "recovery" after running out there.

I sure hope my shoes that I ordered come tomorrow... the sole on my other shoe started flapping around at the end of our run today :rotfl:

Let's stay motivated this week!!

Carla - I usually do a teaspoon of Peanut Butter after working out and about a cup of milk. If I am off with my eating for the day like I usually get on the weekends I might do a carb. Pria and Luna Bars are also good.

Oh I should have updated my workout. I made it for the 6th day in a row to the gym. I usually stick with 4 or 5 days tops but pushed myself and made it. I was in the zone during my run on the treadmill and managed 1 mile no short stops for water. I was feeling so good that I added an extra quarter mile like Carla suggested and felt great. I finished with a 15 minute power walk and 45 minutes on the eliptical.

AWESOME!!!!! That's really great Catherine!

Carla, I carry one 16 oz bottle of water with me when I go out. IF it's really hot and I expect to go through more water I take another one with me and place it on the ground near a bush that I pass at the end of my street. I pass by it again 1.5 mile into my run so by then if I've drank half of my first water I usually down the rest and grab the 2nd one on my way by. If you have the stroller it shouldn't be too bad carrying extra? I find I drink more and feel better when I have it with me when it's really hot and humid outside. The sports drinks usually make me feel worse when I'm done and i'm not sure why?

To add that I slept in today and didn't feel like running, but I'll be out tomorrow and hopefully tuesday either outside or at the Y since I'm leaving Tuesday to go up to my aunt's and won't be back until Thurs/Fri. I tried running up at her place but it's upstate and they literally live on the side of a mountain. Makes for great walking but even when I was in great shape I couldn't run up those hills. Great running down but eventually I had to get back up!

Good job everyone! Reading these posts has definitely inspired me to get off the computer and get outside more than once...

I did three miles tonight, came home got Lucky and went back out for another mile at a slower pace. He is an old boy with a bad back and can't handle walking as hard as Momma but he KNOWS it is his turn when I come home LOL

A spoonful of peanut butter and some milk is also my snack of choice Catherine. Full of good for you protein, potassium, calcium and vitamins!! Carla, maybe for you since your out in the heat, the peanut butter for the protein and a low-cal electrolyte drink to replenish those electrolytes. I love the new Powerade Zero!

Awesome Catherine!!!

Yeah- I can easily throw another water bottle in the stroller. Just haven't really needed it before. But wouldn't hurt to have it in there for hotter days/ longer runs! I think we were getting dehydrated today and it left us feeling bad most of the day. Don't want that to happen again! Just need more water. Thanks Catherine and Andrea for the ideas on the peanut butter and milk - will definitely give that a try! Today was just bad! DD fell asleep in the stroller when we got back so I wanted to jump in the shower and get everyone ready, etc etc... I should have made sure to get something to eat before I started feeling so horrible. Well, lesson learned!

Depends on how I feel in the morning if I just skip it or walk (leaning towards skipping right now lol). I have to wrap my head around everything I need to get done this week for the wedding on Saturday. So, I might just skip tomorrow and get my game plan for the week in place and clean up the house!

April- I agree...I love downhill, but you have to do the uphill at some point! Today wasn't bad getting down to the park, but the run back was torture lol! I told DH that's probably what driving back from Disney after a week vacation would be like :rotfl:.

Sometimes you need a break Carla. I forced myself to take one yesterday. If I don't take breaks my body hates me.

I went to the gym and ran 2 miles - yeah quite the jump from a mile and a quarter on Sunday. I was frustrated with Mike and took it out on the Treadmill. I was surprised I lasted but Joey Greco and Cheaters helped me out as well the whole time.

I'm up at my Aunts, did a lot of walking yesterday around the park, and ate ok overall, only 2 bites of funnel cake! (It helps when you only buy 1 and split it between 6 people)

You are right Catherine- sometimes our bodies do need a break! Just have to not beat myself up for it lol. Actually after taking Monday off I feel great! It's raining here this morning, so I'll have to hit the treadmill. I have been saying that I want to get back into a routine of doing the yoga and strength training on the Wii Fit and I'm going to make myself do that today.

We have the rehearsal and dinner tonight- so probably a long night ahead. Then tomorrow and Friday are going to be really busy working on the cakes (and the kids lol). Saturday morning is going to be crazy getting everyone ready and getting the cakes there and set up. So, I'll have to try to work in some exercise somewhere during those days.

That's great Catherine- at least you used your frustration to your advantage! Sometimes we have to push ourselves to see how far we can go too! It also helps when you get into a show and pass the time faster!

Well, last week was horrible- did not work out at all :(. But now the wedding is over and I'm jumping back in!! We ran 3.75 miles this morning so that's a good start. But not running all week plus being exhausted from the weekend made it a chore for sure!

I try to do the body test on the Wii Fit every morning. It does you weight and some balance tests and gives you your Wii Fit Age. I FINALLY hit my goal of prepregnancy weight:cooldance:. Now onto my next goal!! I think it is mostly attributed to getting back to running so at least there has been a benefit to the torture lol.
