Ok, so I bought my house five years ago and since the day I moved in I have had to see my neighbors poor dog cooped up in a 'pen' that isn't big enough for a puppy let alone a big 100 pound dog. Rain, sleet, snow, hail, and heat...the dog is ALWAYS out there. It breaks my heart! I can't count the number of times I have just cried seeing this poor animal out there. They only come out to THROW it food and that's it. They never interact with it, they never play with it, and it is just in this cage in the very back of their property by itself ALL the time!! I live way out in the country and many of the 'old timers' and 'red-necks' just don't care and the so-called animal service around here is run by these kind of people so they are no help. I want to just let the dog go free!! I know I can't say anything to them because I don?t know if I could control what came out of my mouth and they are the kind of people that I just I wouldn't get anywhere with! UGH I am just venting. WHY do people even get pets that obviously want nothing to do with them...ok I'm done :cry:

There are a couple of "those" around here too. One poor dog was chained up in his yard for a year after the family moved away. He just had someone throw it some food. Had NO interaction. Luckily, there is a sweet lady around here that takes these 2 dogs on walks everyday. It definitely breaks my heart. When we were under a tornodo warning, they left the dog chained up. Very sad.

I can't understand why people go to the bother or expensive of having a pet if it isn't going to be loved. It breaks my heart... My father had a neighbor who chained their dog up all day with no shelter in the Florida heat, and the poor puppy would often step in his water dish and spill it all... for a while my father would jump the fence to give the dog water during the day...but finally he couldn't take it anymore, and just knocked on their door, and said..."Can I have your dog?" they said sure and handed over the dog... The dog has been a wonderful companion for my father... a big dog full of puppy energy and needing lots of love and training...it has really been a great match.
I think it says alot about a person... in how they treat their animals...
Sorry you have to see that every day.

Your stories made me very sad that people would treat animals like that. My 2 "babies" dug out from under our fence yesterday morning, and we have been driving around looking for them ever since, except for sleeping last night. We love them (and miss them) so much that I can't understand how people can mistreat their pets. I'm glad your dad's neighbor was willing to give the pup to him.
We live in S. AL and our neighbors have a Husky that they keep chained up outside. I feel so sorry for him as I know he must be soooo hot.

Oh, I hope you find them too. :hugs:
I always felt so sad as a kid when something happened to our pets. Once we had a cat missing for 9 days - we thot he was gone gone. But one day we heard a dreadful sounding yowl outside the door and there he was!! Got shut in somewhere because he was all dusty. -- Anyway, it was like a small miracle to us - and I hope for one for you, too.
And yes, I find it hard to understand why people who don't care about their animals even want to have them, or keep them in the first place! Give them a chance to go somewhere they'd be appreciated! -- However, there are people who have kids who don't really care about them or treat them well, either, and I find that even harder to understand. Sometimes I guess, some people are missing a little something called the ability to love and give. How sad.

My elderly neighbor has a german shepard that she has for "protection". I understand she's in her 80's but we live on a street with either very young kids or retired couples.. Anyhow that poor dog used to be left outside on it's chain all day long, 100 degree humid temps. My other neighbor called the township bc the dog would bark the second someone walked out in their own yard. We couldn't even enjoy a dinner out back without her barking. A new family moved in on the other side of her and within 2 days had a privacy fence put up. She blamed me for calling the township and getting the noise ordinance put into place. Which I never did, I tolerated her barking for 4 yrs before the other neighbors called. What I DID do was call the local animal shelter or SPCA (our local county office) and complained that this dog was being left outside all day long in the heat with no water etc. They did come out and investigate and you know what, she wasn't left outside for long periods of time after that! As much as the barking annoyed me and the dog itself scared me bc of my young kids (she was there for protection and has gotten off her leash) I hate to see any animal suffer like that.
Our county's are pretty tough on abuse to animals, I think Oprah's show a few months ago on the puppy mills featured one or two from the county near us, it happens a lot and of course Phila has a lot of animal fighting rings that get busted.
I do agree with Lanny, as bad as I see some people treat their animals I see kids being treated the same way. These types of people don't derseve to have anyone in their care!

It's so frustrating and sad to see how some people treat their animals- they definitely don't deserve them.

I"d knock on the door, they'd have one warning from me. If they didn't do something about it, and the county or local humane society didn't help out, the dog would be set lose. Period. I don't tolerate animal abuse or ignorance. When I had my rescue group, we recovered a little hunting dog and gave it back to the owner. The second time it happened, and we found it in the mouth of another dog being shaken, it didn't get returned. I made a phone call and it left the state that night and is now living a great life.

Grrr...this makes me very, very mad. So many people think EVERYTHING is disposable. All I can say is that these people are missing the best unconditional love there is.

I just don't understand the mentality. It didn't seem to be as bad in FL. I know animal cruelty is everywhere, but this ignorant mentality seems to be so much worse here. I can't tell you how many times I have been told 'it's just a dog'. A couple years ago, I went to a ?town meeting? for the local animal shelter (which is a joke and run by people with this mentality) and was almost booed out of the place because I was one of the only ones who wanted the City to fund a better shelter. That is the kind of mentality I am dealing with. The gate is locked on the dog's cage. I scoped it out one night and it has a huge padlock on it and it is really high. I even spoke to the ASPCA out of Louisville and they said it was not a crime to keep a dog in a cage and that as long as they were giving it food and water that there isn't anything they could do and they are almost 100 miles away!!
Anyway, I have spent the last hour searching the net and have some ideas but I need to do something. Yes the dog has food and water but it still has no life. It just breaks my heart! If I could have just taken him, I already would have.

Florida, for their lack of knowing how to use voting machines and other ills they may have, is great when it comes to animal cruelty. They have very little tolerance. They have strict demands on puppy sales, you are NOT allowed to leave an animal here in a car, and they insist on low cost vaccination clinics and spay/neuter clinics. Each county seems to have a great animal control shelter too.

Thanks for all the "well-wishes" about my babies. They've apparently made the rounds as they've been sighted by several people in nearby neighborhoods but it's been over 2 days now so.....I'm still hoping and praying. (Okay, ya'll can fuss at me now - no we didn't have collars on them because we keep our gates locked and never dreamed the dingalings would dig out. They're 5 and 7 years old, and have been raised outside in a fenced yard since they were born). I've used up a $70 tank of gas looking for them . We have one baby left at home - at least someone knows when he's got it good - and he's been sooo pitiful. He hasn't eaten much at all since Friday, and just mopes around (like me).
Anyway, thanks, again, for your thoughts and prayers.

Hey Cindy - I just found you on PetFinders yesterday. Guess everyone probably knew except me but that's really neat.

As a reward for bad behavior, they now have to wear collars with tags all the time, not just for outings, and DH is wiring around the fence. I'll kinda feel bad when they make that discovery but if it keeps them from digging out....
I filled up their food bowls yesterday, and they ate like crazy, but I guess that may have been a bad thing as they both got sick shortly thereafter. No telling what kinda nasty stuff they've been eating all week. (I still believe someone was keeping them, and they dug their way out of there). They crawled in their doghouses at 7 last nite, and didn't make a peep until 8 a.m. today.

BTW...I didn't know Cindy was on Petfinders...I'll have to look.

I could hardly believe my eyes when I saw them (actually I heard them barking when I drove up after work). Can you believe they dug their way back into the fence?! They must've had quite an adventure as I've barely heard a peep out of them today. Sleeping mostly. The male dog, that had the brains to stay home, just can't seem to understand why his "woman" isn't thrilled to see him. He has "flirted" with her all day long, and she just snaps at him. (Just like a man - hasn't seen her in a week so he thinks deserves a little nookie ). Guess he's forgotten that she's fixed, too.
Proof again that God answers prayers, even for dogs.

I am so happy for you. I have thought about your dogs many times this week, as I know how we would feel if this happened to us.
So funny that they "dug" their way back in. They must have really missed being home. LOL

DH is outside now putting the finishing touches on the wire around the fence. It will hurt my feelings to hear them touch it but I guess that's the only way to make sure they won't dig out again. It would be nice to think they learned a lesson but, who knows, they may have had a good time out in the big ol' world, and want to make a break again someday.
