What are some things that make you really think, or you wish you knew the answer for?

I will start-why does a little splinter hurt so much? :(

Something I've always wondered is why you can't tickle yourself. I remember my mom telling me that once when I was kid, and I didn't believe her. So I tried and tried (unsuccessfully). Now I tell my girls that and they don't believe me either. But when they ask why, I am totally stumped.

I was on my way home from work and I had almost all green lights. It made me think about how they decide which lights will be which color for how long. I know it's kind of dumb, but I'm amazed by the people that plan intersections and stoplights. I still can't figure out how they work so well together!

This is dumb, I know....But I always wondered why they call being cold, being chili, when the chili that you eat is hot.

Tricia - my kids are the same. Why can't you tickle yourself?

But did you ever notice that if you have a scratch on your foot, someone else can't get it for you? It tickles if they try to scratch your itch on your foot.

OK I will take a stab at explaining these two.

You can't tickle yourself because the nerve endings in your fingertips send the message to your brain that they are touching something that supercedes the nerve impulses for registering tickling.
If we grab our sides in an attempt to tickle ourselves, our brain anticipates this contact from the hands and prepares itself for it. By taking away the feeling of unease and panic, the body no longer responds the same as it would if someone else were to tickle us.

Hiccups are caused when your diaphram which contracts for inhalation has a spasm. The diaphragm almost always works perfectly. When you inhale, it pulls down to help pull air into the lungs. When you exhale, it pushes up to help push air out of the lungs. But sometimes the diaphragm becomes irritated. When this happens, it pulls down in a jerky way, which makes you suck air into your throat suddenly. When the air rushing in hits your voice box, you're left with a big hiccup.

Some things that irritate the diaphragm are eating too quickly or too much, an irritation in the stomach or the throat, or feeling nervous or excited. Almost all cases of the hiccups last only a few minutes.

The most interesting cure I know is to drink something while pulling down on your earlobes. It works almost everytime. It also works best using a straw rather than having someone else hold the cup for you.

Interesting! I wonder why I used to be ticklish, but now I'm not? Anyone could itch my foot and it would not tickle. DH and the kids try to get me all the time. Same thing with my Dad. We are not ticklish people, my mom on the other hand!! All you have to do is threaten and she'll fold like a house of cards!!

Why is that when you sneeze, you automatically close your eyes!

TOOOOOO Funny. I was going to say this but didn't, glad you did. I remember in 6th grade standing around with friends at lunch time trying to sneeze with our eyes open to see if they really would. So silly.

Interesting study I just read about recently about this topic. Small study, so not too sound statistically, but interesting none-the-less...

Researchers are beginning to think that the "contagious" yawn is linked somehow to our ability to empathize with our fellow-man (or woman:p ). A study was done with autistic individuals (can't remember if it was adults or kids) who have a marked lack of empathy due to the condition. Interestingly, they don't yawn "contagiously." Something to ponder further.

OK, my question is, how do I know that the blue you perceive in the sky is the same as the blue I perceive, is the same as the blue someone else perceives?

another one...those darned optical illusions. I know it is all linked to to optic nerve and the way the impulses are perceived by the brain, but man, they are weird!

To me that is very interesting. I have always kind of wondered why I seem to yawn contagiously more then my hubby. :) Now I know. :)hehe

I have always wondered how big whale poo is. I mean it's not like you ever hear of any ships being sunk by whale poo. Now think about elephant poo and you too may start to ponder this.
A friend started to do research into it, but we decided that the answer might mean I have nothing left to live for anymore if I had nothing weird to ponder....
