A friend who has a developmentally delayed child due to some medical issues had them recommended by her daughter's therapist. She bought a huge lot of them on Ebay for not a lot of money. Another use for them (besides making cool stuff) is to stick them to writing paper to help kindergarteners stay in the lines while writing letters. That is how my friend learned about them.
Wikki Stix are also used by Occupational Therapists for fine motor development. That is where my kids first used them. They are great!
We have a bunch. I used to have them in my classroom for kids. We wrote letters out of them, used them to "circle" or "underline" things in books. I recently pulled them out for my 3 yo DS and he is JUST getting into them. They could easily be used up to 8 or 9 years old!
