Default Tricia ~ Question about IP's

Tricia ~ If I manually change my IP address on my computer (i'm having some technical problems and it may be a possible solution ) will that mess my account up here? I have no idea how IP's work and with all the concern over fraud, am i correct in assuming that changing my IP will be a problem? Do we have 1 'master' IP address for our SR account or does it change each time we log in? I am clueless when it comes to tecnicall stuff so I apologize in advance if it's a goofy question.
    Thanks ~ Kristen

Im not sure how you would go about changing your IP address but it really doesn't matter. Each account can have as many IP addresses as you want. HOWEVER, each IP address can have only one account associated with it. Since the IP address is used to track if more than one account uses an IP address it looks as though one person has more than one account. However, one account can use IP address from all over the country if they want. So accessing your account while traveling (for example) is perfectly ok as long as you aren't using a computer that is used by another account holder on an IP address associated with that account holder. HTH!

Thanks for the quick response Janet!
So a SR account can have 100 different IP addresses as long as none of those 100 IP address are used to access another SR account. Makes perfect sense now. Thank you.

    Janet is right (as always).

SR doesn't care how many computers you use to access your account. It cares how many accounts are accessed from the same computer. Changing your IP is not a good solution.

tech speak: Your public IP address is assigned to you by your ISP. You can't change it without their help in some way. Think of an IP address as your postal address. You can't change your postal address without help from the USPS. You can change your name on the address, but not the physical address. If you have a small home network or a internet router (like a Linksys, Dlink, etc plugged into your internet connection) with an IP address like 192.168.x.x, that is not your "real" IP address and isn't used on the internet.

Great Tech speak! It was very simple to understand.

Since we can use as many IP's as we want which good, But how do we know if that ip has ever been used before! or was in use!

I know the simple solution is just to only use your own home IP! to not to have to worry!

Thank you Sunshine Guy for your help. I am not entirely sure that changing the IP would help. And I really don't feel like trying to go down a complicated road blindly for no reason. You comparison to the postal address was very helpful. I understand it now in a way I didn't before! Very well put, as always. Thanks for your input.

I had a similar question I was just going to post - I will be at my parents' house for a couple days next week. They are not SR members yet, but I plan on changing that during my visit Will I be able to check out my account, show my parents' what it's all about, maybe do a survey or daily scratch-off, but no offers, and then sign them up on the same computer?! If I had to, I guess I could go without for a couple days on my own account, if it means my parents' could sign up without trouble.... But I was hopeful that if I didn't do any offers it might make a difference ?!??!

Your best bet is to open account for them while you are there and then show them what to do through their own account. You can check your account but from there but you cant do anything that will earn you money. It really is better to be safe then sorry. You should be ok with the forum and also just checking the account information pages for your account. HTH!

Checking the balance would be OK? Hmm, didn't realize that. I personally think I'd just log in to the forum (assuming a banner is in your sig) and "check" your balance in that way.

Thanks! Looks like I'll be giving the hubby a little SR tutorial before I leave - can't miss out on that chance for a 3 cent scratch off for 3 whole days in a row!!!!!!!
