I thought this might be helpful for when us older SRers refer to programs that newbies might not know about. Here is a run down of each common Windows program and where to find them. If you have a Mac please put a similar post below for fellow Mac users.

CCleaner -> this is a free cookie cleaning program. It will clear out cookies, history, and temporary internet files. Download the current version and install/run

http://www.ccleaner.com/download

AVG Free -> free antivirus software. It caught many things that my old Norton missed!! You will have to uninstall other antivirus or at least disable them before running this one. Don't run 2 antivirus softwares at the same time. I hear bad things will/might happen. Download the free edition. Run all the time

Spybot Search and Destroy -> searches for spyware and deletes them. Click on download now. Run every couple of days. Note: this has been causing some issues with taking the daily surveys lately (blank/white screens, not being able to click on the link). If you experience a problem uninstall this software. You should be ok with running your antivirus and adaware.

Ad Aware -> searches for ad ware and spyware on your system and deletes them. Click on download now. Run every couple of days.

McAfee Site advisor - to warn about sites that may potentially spam you or put spyware on your computer.

Editing to add in Mac Stuff as I find it (I am not familar with Mac so these may not be the best):

http://www.santasw.com/ -> same idea as ccleaner above but for Macs.

Mac site which has links for spy ware removal, firewalls, antivirus and where to find them -> http://www.unwantedlinks.com/macsupport.htm

Thanks M 'n c for this great where to find artical this will be very helpful to reffer to when answering questions, and to point new users in the right direction, and avoid answering the same question over and over again.

So thank you and WOOT! for your effort and hard work!

Unless you know something their site doesn't, can you add that ccleaner doesn't have a version for Mac (or Linux)?

Off to find out if the others are the same...

And thank you. :)

editing to add...actually none of those seem to have anything for Macs. :( Do you know anywhere to look? Even DH-the-wannabe-Microsoft-employee-PC-guy says I don't have to really worry about viruses, but the ad stuff and spy stuff would be good to seek out.

Any ideas? Thank you so much!

I'm illiterate on Mac stuff but I will see if I can find anything and add it as I do. Brian mentioned a ccleaner equivalent the other day so I searched the link and put it in the original post. I'll see what else I can find.

Are you on Mac or Linux?

Mac, OS X.

Thank you!

Ok I added a webpage I found through cnet.com. See if that might help you. I've never owned a Mac so I can't testify if any of the programs they talk about are good or not.
