I am super excited. I finally decided to get a Kindle and they just announced the 3rd generation Kindle and preorders. So I went ahead and cancelled my current order and replaced it today for the new Kindle which is smaller, has 3G and Wi-Fi and comes in gray. Now I just have to wait a month until it ships.

Oh good you got the one with both connections. Yay!

For those who don't know, there's one that has ONLY wifi, and one that has both 3G (cell networks) and wifi (internet). It can make a difference, so get the one you need (don't just go by price). :)

Sorry. :) I used to work amazon customer service, so I want to make sure people are getting exactly what they want up front!

Catherine I'm so excited for you!

Did you see the *lighted* covers?

I did! The only thing is that my husband was really sweet at Christmas and bought me a book light so I think I'm going to get a regular cover and then attach the book light as needed to it. I don't want to hurt his feelings.

ETA: I really really want one of the Kate Spade covers at Barnes and Noble for the nook and since the new Kindle is the same size I might order one through SR.

I saw the announcement too and am so torn between the new Kindle and the B&N nook! I have been researching and just last night, I had pretty much decided to order the nook (through SR of course!!) and then today I read the article in the paper about the new Kindle and now I am back to indecision.

Any thoughts on which is better...nook or Kindle?

I don't know a whole lot about them but I was leaning toward the Nook also because I heard (I havven't verified it yet) that the Nook allows you to share your book purchases with friends. This is a great feature that I have never seen offered with the Kindle.

Yes, you are correct because I read on the B&N website that you can lend an ebook to a friend for 14 days. Not sure of the specifics...but I think whoever you lend it to has to either have a nook themselves or be running the nook software on a device, like a PC. My daughter (in college) wants one too and as we are both avid readers, that would be a huge selling point for us as we could share our purchases.

Nook: you can lend some books to a set number of people for a set number of days. Helpful, but not as all encompassing as the soundbite makes you think.

DH has tried Nook and Kindle side by side...he likes the Kindle. Which isn't just b/c he works in the department...I mean his boss is madly in love with the ipad...though of course it does help to be passionate about the product. :)

I tried a sony e-reader at office max or somewhere like that the other day...didn't so much like it! Glad hubby doesn't work *there*. :sunshine:

What is it about the Kindle that he likes better? I will be totally honest in that I am on the "outs" with Amazon so I truthfully won't be buying any product from or by them LOL but I really would like to know what makes it better than the Nook? I like that I can get cash back from SR for the Nook, I like that Barnes and Nobles has so many great accessories for the Nook, I like that I can share books on the Nook. However, I am a realistic person so if there is something about the Kindle that makes it better than Nook I would consider it.

Oh, Kindle does have a way to share books, but it's limited and complicated in other ways.

Using my brother's situation....he has a kindle and an amazon account. His in-laws have Kindles and an account. If his MIL buys a book that he might find interesting, he can take his kindle "off" his account, put it on MIL's, and download the book. He can then read it. Once he connects to his account again, the book will be gone, but unless you get daily downloads each day, you really should keep the connection off to save battery life.

This gets complicated b/c if you forget that you're on someone else's account and buy a book, you're using THEIR money...so you have to get your kindle off their account and connect back to yours before you want to buy more books.

You can have something like 6 kindles on your account.

Yeah, I definitely hear you about it not being as all encompassing as they make it sound. I would need to read the fine print on that point for sure.

Something else that I am unclear about is whether or not the Kindle would support borrowing ebooks from my library. My library does have that as a lending option and I would be interested in using that feature. I got the impression that nook allowed that while Kindle doesn't. Can anyone confirm that?

I haven't really considered the Sony e-reader or the iPad. I have pretty much narrowed it down to Kindle or nook and am still on the fence!!

I also was just doing some research and read a couple of different things that say the Nook allows you to use the ebooks from the library. Overall the jist I have seen is that the Kindle only accepts material that is formatted by Kindle/Amazon. This seems to be an issue with some people and not so much with others. I have seen where people say that they are able to reformat material so that it is usable by the Kindle even though it is not technically supposed to be. I don't know how easy or hard that would be. Honestly I don't know if I would ever even use the share or library function but it makes me feel just little bit better knowing that I could if I wanted to. It also makes me feel like Barnes & Noble is considering its customers and not just its bottom line.

So I guess I did understand it correctly in that nook allows borrowing ebooks from the library and Kindle doesn't. Thanks for confirming. I think I would definitely use the library function, as I really enjoy using the library for regular print books.

I believe that the Kindle supports PDF formats so if that is offered at the library it shouldn't be an issue with the Kindle.

I opted for the Kindle because I'm not a huge fan of B&N and I did a quick comparison on ebook prices and Amazon beat B&N by a few bucks on each book I was looking at. I also don't like that you can just use the Nook at B&N as their catalogue seems to be a bit shorter than Amazon's.

Thanks Cate! That is what I was looking for! I have read post after post on all kinds of forums tonight and noone could tell me WHY they liked the Kindle better! So the books are cheaper per book for Kindle and they have a larger selection? Hmmmm....I guess I need to really think about this. Here is another question. Can't the Nook use any ebook format so if it were for another reader they could use it? The only ones that the Nook can't use is the Kindle books? I am getting more confused by the minute LOL. I was going to ask for this for Christmas but I need to figure out which one is best.

Next question...only slightly off topic. If I were to get an Ipad instead could I use books from anywhere? (Brandon is going to kill me if I go from a $150 ereader to an ipad :rotfl:)

the iPad does support Kindle books. So do Blackberries and your normal computer.

Now for books, I have done some research on this and it seems like if you search online and find .mobi books that they will read on the Kindle without needing conversion. Otherwise, there are programs and instructions out there on how to crack book codes on Kindle Books and how to convert formats between readers. (sorry Molly) If you are a little tech savvy then this won't be too hard to follow.

I should also add from my research that there aren't any readers out there that allow people to buy you eBooks as a gift which is unfortunate.

I CAN READ BOOKS ON MY BLACKBERRY?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

I had no idea! Not that I could read for very long in that little bitty print LOL but I had no idea. See I need more research ROFL. I think I might need that Ipad afterall

Very timely thread. I just got a Nook today for my birthday. I am so excited!! I wasn't sure which e-reader I wanted, but when I heard that you can use ebooks from the library, I was sold on the Nook. Barnes and Noble even offers a class on how to use the Nook (there was an invitation in with my gift). Got a B&N gift card, and will now have to check out the accessories, and buy through SR of course!!

I would never ever discourage anyone from shopping for the cash back % but this might be another reason to go with the Kindle. http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/Investing/Dispatch/default.aspx?feat=1789205&GT1=33009

My Kindle came Monday and I am in LUV with it! I can't believe how cool it is to read on. If anyone is on the fence, BUY IT!

1. Do Kindles get software updates? (I'm thinking if a later generation gets access to library books via Overdrive)
2. Cate, did you end up getting the nook cover? How is it working?

I think they get software updates. Try searching the Amazon message boards on that one or ask MollyEllis :D

I did not get the Nook Cover. I looked at the inside of the cover and the bottom "holder" would cover up the buttons on the Kindle. So instead I bought a cute one on Etsy and it is working well.

Oh another thing about the Kindle. I learned last week that you can download some more "current" books for free on Amazon thanks to their special promotions. Sometimes it is book 2 or 3 in a series but free is free. You go to Free Kindle Books then click on the link about special promotions.

I had to wait for hubby to get home to ask. He says yes they get updates. And from what he knows of the philosophy behind it, he believes that it would be updated if they ever got the ability to get library books on Kindles... No guarantees (that's coming from me), but there have actually been plenty of updates for various reasons of all the Kindles, even the Kindle 1.

So I ended up deciding on a Kindle, as the nook did not wow me with it's touchscreen. I really recommend trying them both in person. Now I just need to wait to order it in November.
Oh, and for my Vera girls-an e-reader Vera sleeve is coming in January. I'm still on the hunt for a cover (non-leather), but figured I'd share.

congrats, cate! i've been researching e-readers because i considered getting DD13 one for Christmas, and so far, they're running neck and neck. i really like the idea of getting books from the library with the nook, but with kindle books being cheaper...i'm torn. anyone got a tie-breaker?

Looks like Heather just posted that she tried both and decided on the Kindle.

I think either one would work I'm just partial to Amazon. I'm not a huge B&N fan - actually prefer Borders stores - so I'm no help. LOL

I will say that I am still enjoying my Kindle and am getting my mom one for Christmas. It just helps with the clutter and I like that you can change the text size and font type when you read.

Kindle has free books available, which I hope will balance out the loss of the library. I just was not a fan of the nook's touchscreen-it felt too gimicky. Also, my Kindle will be able to sync with my phone's Kindle app.

You can now give Kindle eBooks as gifts!!! This will make my holiday wishlist a heck of a lot easier.
