For anyone who was on the DIS thread about our lovely monthly friend, you can get the Diva Cup at drugstore.com and get some SR credits back. Someone probably figured that out already, but I just realized and thought I'd let everyone know just in case!

Interesting. I had not heard of this. Before I had my IUD put in, I used to use some kind of cup. But now I don't have periods. When I do again, I will definitely have to check this out.

FWIW, I adore my diva cup. I have PCOS, and it's the only thing that I haven't bled through when it was untreated (this is also why I liked this better than the keeper-it has a calibration that tells me how much comes out so I can tell my lady doc). And it's amazing the amount of money I saved over the three years I've had mine.

If anyone needs newbie help, feel free to PM me.

I'm still on the learning curve lol, but I'm hanging in there. I am having some issues that are causing me to have it about 20 days of the month so this is going to save me some BIG bucks!

I too have had mine for several years and LOVE It. It took me a while to get used to it, but once you do it's great! All the money to save is another great reason to own one!

My mom was having similar problems, and the two things she regretted not trying later on were chiropractic and acupuncture. Since her regret was awful and memorable, I try to tell everyone who is having troubles like that about what she wishes she would have tried.

I personally keep trying to find a place that sells cloth pads with an affiliate site, but I haven't yet! :sunshine:

Diva Cup? What is this? Please inform me.

It's a menstrual cup. Instead of using tampons or pads, which are bad for your body AND the environment this is a silicone cup that you fold up and pop inside kind of and it collects all the menstrual fluid. You then remove it, dump it, rinse it, and reinsert. Unlike tampons that run the risk of TSS from the bleached cotton and rayon fibers, there's no risk with these. Except maybe if you leave it in for more than 12 hours you increase the chance of yeast infections. I don't think I would be able to go 12 hours without emptying it though. :rotfl:

This (http://www.divacup.com/) is the Diva website if you want to read up on it and see what it's about.

Wow, I've never heard of this! It doesn't spill over or hurt?

I stand corrected! Instead of tampons or DISPOSABLE pads that are bad for the environment. :)

Well the first time I tried it, I did a dry run and had some problems. But when it was actually show time it went well. It doesn't spill because there's small holes in the cup that create suction so it doesn't come out or spill. It doesn't hurt because unlike tampons it doesn't absorb so it doesn't "dry" you out inside. It's also silicone so it's flexible.

It does take some getting used to and if you get one I strongly suggest practicing before you get AF so you get comfortable with it.

Some complaints I've heard is how do you clean it when your out.
Basically you don't, if I'm out in public I just (excuse the boldness) dump and put it back in. Once home you can take it out and rinse it. Really it's not any messier then tampons.

Someone else said what if I'm heavier then normal? This works for that too, it may not look big but believe it or not the ones I know who have heavier periods say it works really well for them. Again like Heather said it was a learning process, had some issues in the beginning takes a while to get used to, but once you do it's a piece of cake.

Diva cup... What a name for such a thing. But I like it. And too join in I have to say I have never heard of such a thing. Although I hesitate about it because I have issues as well. I am afraid it would be too painful.
I know I know too much TMI but how else can you talk about such a thing
its not something you would want to bring up while having coffee with someone either.

It's all natural. Not like any woman DOESN'T have to deal with the issue.

I was afraid it would be painful too. Particularly because I have been umm...well- abstinent for close to 2 years! (being a single parent of a disabled child doesn't leave much time for dating) A dry run didn't really work for me, but once things were in full swing it was much easier. I have read of some women using a lubricant to make things easier. About cleaning it in public, I had to once and I carried a bottle of water with me. I was able to rinse it off and pop it back in without a problem.

I just used it for the first time and the first day was great and the second day I had some leakage. I don't think I rotated it enough. I might have to go with the smaller size because it's a little uncomfortable. Or is that normal, I just have to get used to it?

daninyc
04-25-2008, 04:58 PM
If it's uncomfortable I would try the smaller size. I was a little uncomfortable but I realized I didn't have it in right. After that it was great, didn't even realize it was there. Did you read the Diva site? They have some great info, and you can even email them with a question if you need to.

I know this has been brought up on other topics, but it's so nice that things can be discussed here and everyone has respect for everyone else's opinion. The discussion about this on the DIS tends to get ugly and nasty. People can be mean over there!!

I'm glad to hear that some of you guys are using these with success. I want to try it, I'm just waiting to use up the stockpile of supplies I got at CVS during an Extra Care Bucks deal. Once they are gone, I'm ordering one. Thanks for the heads up about Drugstore.com, I love that site, and it gives a great % back too.

Well I ordered one of these last month and so far so good. I am having no issues with it, only a slight amount of leakage after sleeping/lying down but nothing to even really speak of. It was a little uncomfortable the first day but i finally trimmed the stem off a little and that seemed to work. I actually think it is less messy than other forms of protection.

I haven't tried the Diva Cup, but I did use the other brand mentioned earlier (not avail through SR??) for about 2 years until I developed a kidney infection. Now...the device did not CAUSE the UTI and kidney infection per-se, as that is caused by bacteria, but it did somewhat compress my urethra so the urine couldn't pass as easily, which resulted in the infection becoming very bad.

Sorry if TMI, but I just want you ladies to be aware as you use it of any changes in urine flow. I would hate for anyone else to become as sick as I was that summer.

Having said that, I do still use it when swimming and such on heavier days, as no leaks or anything, and I wish I was still able to use it regularly as it was so much more convienient!!!

For me this is actually a mild plus that it presses slightly on the urethra because after delivering a 10lb+ baby the bladder isn't as good as it used to be and I have found that I have less issues when i sneeze or exercise. It isn't bad enough to "do" anything about but is bothersome at times. I do my kegal exercises and that hasn't helped.

Another plus for the Diva cup. I have been complaining to the Dr. for the last 6 years that my flow is getting more and more and that I am having major issues. They keep telling me that is it all relative and that what I think is alot is not really as much as I think it is and that everything is normal or that I might be perimenopausal and it would eventually taper off. Well it was time for my annual exam so I decided to track this last time of the month and record each time I emptied my Diva and the amount. I discovered that this last cycle was over 10 oz. of fluid and 6 of that was in one day. ( Normal is 2-3 oz. per cycle) Took the record to the doctor and she was absolutely speechless. So finally 6 years later they are going to get to the bottom of it. She thinks I may have fibroids so I had the ultrasound today and will have an endometrial biopsy next Friday. The GYN said she thinks she might start encouraging other women complaining of heavy cycles to use a diva cup.

Back in my mid 20's, (1996, 1997) I was having 2 complete cycles every month. I would loved to have had something like the Diva cup then. After 2 years of the twice a month thing, I bled everyday for over 6 months straight (talk about expensive!) before the dr finally figured out what was wrong - then had to have a complete hysterectomy at age 27. So now I don't have to bother with anything!

I am definitely telling my girlfriends about this. What a great idea. Something good for women AND the environment. :sunshine2:
