Can anyone shed some light on the best vacuum out there?

I really loved my Oreck because it was so lightweight and I also thought it cleaned very well, but it only lasted for about 6-8 years and for $300 (I'm sure it's probably much more now as this was several years ago), I thought it should have lasted longer. The electrolux is also a great vacuum if you don't mind hauling around a canister vac and they are pretty pricey too. I have family and friends who have Dyson's and love them, especially if you have pets. I hear they pick up pet hair like no other vacuum. They range in price from about 300-600+ and they are very heavy, so not the greatest for stairs or people with bad backs which I have. One of my brothers got one and took it back because it was just too heavy. Kirby's are also good, but again, very heavy and pricey. Right now I have a plain old Hoover and it works well. Nothing fancy except a hepa, allergy filter and headlight. What I really love, but only use for a quick pick up is a Shark rechargable stick vac. It won't do the deep cleaning, but is great every other day in between really vacuuming weekly. HTH and good luck with your decision!

I have an Oreck and it's ok. I have heard Dyson's do the best job sucking the dirt up from your carpet but I have also heard that some carpet companies will void their warranty if you use a Dyson on the carpet as it can ruin some so check with your carpet company before buying one.

I, too, love my Oreck!! I'm on my second one... first one lasted over 10 years.

LOL!! I was just coming to post a similar question!! Our hoover windtunnel has bit the dust :) So we need to be doing some vacuum shopping as well! Pet hair is a big issue in our house, and while I'm already sold on a dyson, my husband isn't..... Looking forward to hearing more comments! Thanks for starting the thread Kim :sunshine:

My husband is interested in the Kenmore Progressive Direct Drive - does anyone have one of these?! It's half as expensive than the dyson but rated highly. Thanks! (Sorry to be highjacking your thread Kim!! ) :D

I love my Dyson. I have the Animal. With my pets, I need it. It took awhile to get used to, but its great. It practically pushes itself.

I have a dyson (not the pet one) and it is still in mint conditions and I bought it 5 years ago. I really love it. Very good suction and some of the attachments really help with getting in the corners of rooms/ceilings and furniture.

We, too, are a Dyson family. I hadn't heard of the carpet companies' warnings, but I guess I could understand it with the suction that's used!! You might just be pulling up the pad through the carpeting!

I hava Dyson also. What i love most is that it can practically be taken totally apart. If something gets stuck I can take off the part where it is stuck and clean it and then put it back. I have also had parts lost and just went online and ordered a new part. I like the bagless canister and the fact that I can empty it with one hand. I also really like that all of the attachments are contained on the vacuum.

:heart::heart::heart:.
Love my Dyson. I have the Animal as well. It truly is the BEST thing I've ever purchased. It's not cheap, but you don't have to buy bags or lights for it ever. My only complaint is that it doesn't have a light...I wish it did.

I love seeing everything that it sucks up. I had vacuumed w/my old Kenmore prior to getting the Dyson & then tested out the Dyson & you should have seen all the yuckies it picked up! AMAZING!

I just love it! It's great for my allergies (dog) & emptying it out is so easy. I just make sure to use a paper towel to get all the yuckies out of the canister when I'm emptying it.

I got it last year at Target & it was a steal of a deal! They were running a $100 gift card w/purchase of the Dyson...plus, I have my employee discount (10%) PLUS I had an extra 10% off because of my Target Visa rewards! It was a GREAT deal!!

Dyson :heart:er here too!

I bought mine on sale with GC like Jen and I love it so much I would buy it at full price. If you know me (I'm cheap:D) thats amazing that I would pay full price for anything:rotfl:

I too vote for Dyson?I have the animal one and love it. I had to sweet talk my DH into letting me buy. He couldn?t see paying that much for a vacuum but we are both completely happy with it.

Wish I could help with another opinion or option, but we are in love with our Dyson as well! I really like that the filter is washable. I just take it out when it gets yucky, wash it good with soap and water, let it dry completely, and put it back.

Good Luck finding one you really like.

I have stairs and part of the handle turns into a wand and I use one of the attachements for the stairs....its really easy. I also use it to clean the ceiling fans.

i also love the handle. The attachement is in the handle so I can just stop while vacuuming and pull out the handle and use it to get in the corners or on the fan or anywhere else. You dont have to stop and hook up the attachments since it expands from the handle. The expansion is really long too so I would bet you wouldn't even need to carry it up the stairs to vacuum them. Just use the attachement.

I have a Bissel for pets (used to have a persian cat) and love it. I wanted the Dyson but compromised with DH, but my next one will be the Dyson.

I got a great deal on it at Target also. It's bagless, powerful suction and works great. It also has seperate attachments to get into the couch, stairs and I can even get into my car seats with it.

I have to chime in with the rest and say Dyson is the best hands down. It does have great power and I use it gently on my Mom's old rugs (50 year old orientals it can literally suck them apart). It does a super job of getting up everything and as someone else posted you can literally take it apartif something gets stuck. As for stairs that is the best part because that hose on the handle strtches about a half mile so it makes cleaning the stairs very easy. No more wrestling with the vaccuum to stay on the step and not pull you down or drop on top of you while trying to clean the stairs. The cord is really long too so you are not lawys stopping to unplug and move it!!!
