GPS recommendations?

I've been thinking of getting a GPS in the near future for my car. I know I want a Garmin (a coworker who was one of my chauffeurs has one and I could understand hers very well most of the time and with my hearing issues, that was huge). I know she said hers was a few years old now.

I remember reading lifetime maps is a must have. What else should I be looking at? I'd like to use it for when traveling in areas I'm not quite as familiar with, rather than using it every day like my coworker. I'd also like to get something that won't break the bank!

Any suggestions? I'm thinking a field trip to Best Buy might be a good idea so I can see some of these in person.
