49 days to go - time to work on my costume!

I had to share with people who can understand! We hit the 49 days to go mark today and I'm going to start making my costume for MNSSHP this weekend when I go to visit my parents (I'm making Belle's blue provencial dress :) )

It's starting to get so close - we started the countdown in April at around 135 days. This is our first trip ever (except for my dad who has been twice, but back when it was just MK and before he did the whole get married and have a kid thing)

sorry, i'm just excited and I don't think I can contain it to just my DIS pre-trip report anymore!

woot! How's the hair plan coming?

the hair plan is still in the planning stages. I've not braved a trial run yet, but it needs to happen soon. In case my planning doesn't actually work and I need to come up with a plan B, C, D, .... :p

I should get the dress and the blouse done this weekend ... with pictures to follow if I'm pleased with it!

We leave in 51 days :cooldance: I haven't even thought about costumes for dh and I (dd will be Capt. Jack - no princesses for her - lol).

Are you going to the first MNSSHP? We have tickets for that one and I've heard from a few people that the first night is lots of fun with all the CM's really getting in to it.

we are! we'll be at the one on the 14th :) We're all dressing up (my parents and I)
Mom: Tinkerbell
Dad: A clown on vacation (he'll have the clown hat, nose and large bow ties but no make up, a crazy hawiian shirt and toting a big camera around his neck to look touristy)
Me: Belle

maybe we'll run into you guys. We're doing dinner at Tony's at 5:50ish. Everything I've seen and read about it sounds like a complete blast, I'm really hoping there'll be a ton of characters out and stuff like that - and can't wait to see the headless horseman ride!

Oh. I am sooooo jealous. I love MNSSHP. We went 2 years ago on my B-Day and had a blast. DH and I loved that they had all the villains in one place. Plus, he was dressed as Jafar and I was Malificent. And the HalloWishes fireworks are the best. Have a great time!1

We have never been to MNSSHP, so we booked tickets for two nights...hope that it is worth it. Now we have to decide if DH and I are going to dress up.

On Tuesday the 16th we are going to take DDs to BBB to get their hair done and buy dresses...then we are going again on the 18th and I am debating if we should buy them seperate outfits, make them wear the same ones again or not dress up?!?!? So many decisions!

The costumes we wore were kinda heavy and black(of course). Which didn't go well in the Florida heat and humidity of September very well. You might want to take that into consideration.

Also, even though the party doesn't start until 7pm(I think), you can get in as early as 4pm. We got there around 4:30pm, got our party wristband and put our costumes into a locker(which is free on party nights). We went straight to Tomorrowland, then Fantasyland. By the time we came out of Mickey's Philharmagic, around 6pm, they were closing down Fantasyland to prepare for the party. They hustled everyone with a wristband over to Liberty Square, and everyone else was escorted to the exit. We then put on our costumes and partied. The best thing about showing up so early, is that all the rides were walk on. There was no wait whatsoever. We rode more rides in that 1 1/2 hours, then we do in a full regular day at the park.

I SO hope that we get some good lines when we are at the party. It sounds like such a good time. We are hoping to get into the park ASAP, one night we are eating a 5pm dinner at Ohana and then the other night like a 4:30 at Crystal Palace.

Kycha - thanks for all of your positive comments about the party - I read nothing but good things before we bought the tickets and then aftewards found some not-so-fantastic reviews.

I'm so excited for it!

schachteles - dress up! do it! do it! if you can't be a kid at Disney, then where can ya?

I'm excited about the whole trip, right down to the little black mickey heads I drew on my dry erase calendar at work for each day of the trip I'll be gone in September ;)

As promised, here is the picture of what it looks like so far. The blouse still needs its buttons (I waited because I wasn't sure how fitted the dress would be because it's a pattern I hadn't used before and didn't want visible button bumps and didn't know if I would go with velcro instead) The dress and apron need to be hemmed to their appropriate length, I need to make the white underskirt and the blue hair ribbon...

great theme for the costumes! (I used to play basketball in high school and almost did in college, but did track instead)

We extended our trip specifically for the party as well. We were originally scheduled to fly out on Friday the 14th in the evening and then realized that there was a party that night ... so after much deliberation (and consulting people on the DIS, where we got "well, I won't tell you what to do, but my family plans a trip down specifically to go to the party and you'll already BE there ... so you probably would want to do it" type answers) we decided to do it. I said I'd find a way to do tickets and we're on! We can't wait!

Thanks! I think I'm pleased with it, at least for the most part. My mom and I sew quite a bit, but not much in the way of apparel sewing - this little baby involved quite a bit of pattern modification (The collar was not included in the shirt pattern and the dress was actually supposed to be a button front and we turned it into a zippered back w/ inset zipper - that was hard!) I'm going back to my parents next weekend (the 3rd - 5th) because my best friend will be in town to see her parents (we live in Michigan, bff lives in Texas so I don't see her much) and I'll be able to finish it then. The hemming won't take long at all, but I need to pull up some screenshots from the movie to determine how much I need to shorten it. :)

and it does feel good to pay for the party - my parents haven't asked for much of me for the trip (just a $500 contribution, which we all know for a Disney vacation isn't that much) so it feels really good to do something nice in return and be able to contribute. My dad has worked really hard to put together a number of surprises, mostly for my mom since I was able to figure some of them out ;) don't accidently drop hints and expect me not to Google my way to the answer! I think it's going to be really important to make this trip as special as possible. My dad's health is not doing well at all and we just recently found out that he has macular degeneration in his left eye, and there's no telling how quickly that will advance :( So we're very excited and I can't wait to hand over my hard earned GCs thanks to SR : )

Howdy! I'm in Grand Blanc, the parents are in Port Huron - where are you?

and thanks! My mom always had me in various sewing classes each summer when I was younger, learned how to make all sorts of things: patchwork pillows, t-shirt, pull on shorts, a duffel bag, a jean apron, so on and so forth. She thought it was important for me to learn. I'm glad that she had me do it. I mostly do quilting now when I have time, but have made a couple stuffed animals for friends that have had babies. I like sewing, but there are definitely times where it gets frustrating!

and thanks for the good thoughts for my dad. He has good days and bad days with all the various things, so we're really hoping he does well with the trip. :D

We are over near Ann Arbor. And you're mom was right, it is a good skill to have! :)

I say dress up - my parents are as well - the way we see it is that there are very few places where adults can kinda let loose and be a kid again and enjoy a holiday like Halloween. It seems like everything will be so festive and decorated that it just can't help but be even FUNNER dressed up! (and yes, I busted out funner, it seemed like an appropriate time!)

maybe if he doesn't want to dress up fully, you can do fun t-shirts? I know on the MNSSHP threads on the DIS, Jack Sparrow seems to be popular among the adult male set. No matter what, it'll be a blast!

Thank you! I did pretty well on the cost of my "supplies" - the blue fabric came at the high price of $1/yard at Wal-Mart! :rotfl: My most expensive fabric was the fabric for the blouse (which I also used for the apron) because it was actual "shirting" fabric *shrug* it sewed up nicely at least!

and I am indeed a brunette, but will need to buy a hair extension piece since I chopped off my hair in some sort of partial life crisis/need to not have long college-party hair anymore sort of thing a couple months ago ... other than that the only thing I don't have going for me is the eyes - mine are blue, hers are brownish/greenish/hazel.

I actually decided to make it because I couldn't find the blue dress anywhere! I had considered doing her yellow gown, but didn't like the pre-made options and to do it correctly, it would have been too poofy to fly with, so the blue dress won out.

We did MNSSHP last year and it was so much fun. I think we had a better time because we dressed up.

I did it really cheap too:

We were the Incredibles family. Got the shirts at the disney store and just wore black shorts and bought black masks.

The pictures were a scream!

You did a great job on the costume. I'm sure ya'll will have a great time.

Have you seen the children's custom/boutique clothing thread on the family board? I've been following it since the beginning and it has morphed into clothes adults are making, too. It's bee a lot of fun watching it.

Yeah, I've seen it - but I've only seen one adult item, an embellished tank. Some of the things over there that people have come up with are adorable though. My friends need to have kids so I can make them clothes!!!

I've been on that same board - but all I've managed so far are two pillowcase dresses that did come out well but I'm very new to apparel sewing...I bought some disney fabric to make them some pillowcase dresses with but i'm nervous to try anything too fancy yet.

We are headed down September 15-22 and will be at the MNSSHP on the 21st. DD6 is going to be Pocahontas, DD4 is going to be Minnie Mouse and DH and I are dressing up like the old Mouseketeers - easy with short, t-shirt with our names on the front and Mickey ears. Nothing out of the ordinary but this is our first time to MNSSHP and we are so excited!!!!

I should have final pics of me in it after this coming weekend - I'm going to hem it and finish it then.

This will be our first MNSSHP party as well, we can't wait either. The mousketeer outfits are a great idea! especially with one of your DDs being Minnie - that'll make for some adorable pictures :)

Don't be too nervous about branching out from the pillowcase dresses - there are some really easy patterns out there, especially for kids clothes. Patterns can be a bit intimidating the first tim eyou use one, but they're really easy to follow :) It's when you start going rogue and adapting patterns or going without patterns that it get's scary!
