TiVo Program Ending

This is a dumb question but I might as well ask.

Ok so Mike and I have DirecTV and their DVR service. Now with with the DVR service we have we can record 2 shows at the same time but our tv must be tuned into one of the shows if we are home and trying to watch tv.

So:
1) is there a subscription fee for Tivo?
2) is Tivo compatible with any tv service?

I'm just wondering if in the future if we wanted to get a 2nd dvr if this would be an option rather than renting another from directv. Make any sense?
